Bexar County Sheriff Department Detention Guard

Adrian Salazar Aguilar


Age: 21

End of Watch: June 30, 1985
Detention Guard Aguilar was shot and killed after finishing a shift where he was guarding a prisoner at University Hospital. He was shot through the passenger side window of his patrol car. No suspects were identified, and the case has never been solved.

Officer Aguilar was survived by his wife and son.

Wife and Children of Edwyn Gorrell.

Age: 34

End of Watch: July 5, 1988
Patrolman Gorrell succumbed to gunshot wounds received four months earlier when he was shot by a suspect during an arrest attempt. He was in a coma for the four months following the shooting.

Officer Gorrell was survived by his wife, daughter and son.

Husband and Child of Patricia Calderon.

End of Watch: December 27, 1988
Officer Calderon drowned when she fell into Salado Creek while chasing a suspect through thick brush at 0200 hours .Officer Calderon was the first female officer from her agency to die in the line of duty.

Officer Calderon was survived by her husband and son.

Wife and Child of Scott Rogiers.

Balcones Heights Deputy Marshal

Richard Scott Rogiers


Age: 29

End of Watch: March 12, 1989
Marshal Rogiers was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle for speeding just outside the city limits. During the stop he determined that the driver had an outstanding warrant from San Antonio. When he attempted to arrest a struggle ensued. The suspect produced a handgun from his coat pocket and shot Marshal Rogiers in the head. Marshal Rogiers fell to the ground and was able to put out a distress call before being shot in the head a second time. He was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his wounds the following day.

Marshal Rogiers was survived by his wife and son.

Child of Douglas Goeble.

Douglas Scott Goeble


Age: 26

End of Watch: April 20, 1991
Officer Goeble succumbed to gunshot wounds received two days earlier when he was shot and killed while eating in a restaurant at 3080 East Commerce Street. The suspect came behind Officer Goeble and shot him in the back of the neck. Officer Goeble went down and then the suspect shot Officer Goeble a second time behind the left ear. The suspect then turned the gun on his girlfriend and shot her five times in front of her two daughters, killing her. The suspect was apprehended a few hours later. He was sentenced to life and will be eligible for parole in 2006.

Officer Goeble was survived by his fiancee and daughter.

Wife and Children of Fabian Dominguez.

Age: 29

End of Watch: January 15, 1995
Officer Dominguez was shot and killed while investigating a burglary in his neighborhood. As Officer Dominguez was returning home from work he noticed a suspicious vehicle a few blocks from his home. As he was approaching the vehicle with his weapon drawn, he ordered the driver to turn off the car and give him the keys. As he reached in to get the keys the suspect smacked his gun and shot him at the same time, causing him to drop his weapon inside the vehicle. The suspect then exited the vehicle and retrieved his weapon and shot him several more times.The suspect was sentenced to death and one of the other two suspects was sentenced to life. The third suspect has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for engaging in organized crime.

Officer Dominguez was survived by his wife and twin daughters.

Michael Corey McInnis

Age: 25

End of Watch: August 28, 1995
While investigating a burglary, Officer McInnis was killed after his cruiser slammed into a crash barrier while pursuing a suspect on NW Loop 410.

Officer McInnis was survived by his wife and two sons.

City of San Antonio Fire Apparatus Operator

Jesse F. Bricker, Jr.

Age: 47

End of Watch: May 4, 1997

Fire Apparatus Operator Jesse Bricker died of cardiac arrest exacerbated by stress and smoke inhalation that occurred while fighting a four alarm motel fire. After returning from the fire, FAO Bricker complained of not feeling well. He was transported to the hospital that morning at 5:56a.m. in severe respiratory distress. He died at approximately 4:38 pm. Other personnel also suffered from various symptoms as a result of exposure to fire and smoke. The following day, an environmental consultant was directed to sample and analyze the scene and clothing worn by firefighters.

FAO Jesse Bricker was survived by his wife and daughter.

Oscar Domingo Perez

Age: 31

End of Watch: March 24, 2000
Officer Perez was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man who was wanted in another jurisdiction. Officer Perez and his partner were sent to a hotel after his agency received a tip that the suspect was there. After the suspect refused to enter the door, the officers opened the door using a room key. As the officers entered the room the suspect dropped behind the bed and opened fire, striking Officer Perez in the head. Officer Perez's partner returned fire, but did not strike the suspect, who then committed suicide. Officer Perez was flown to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead during surgery.

Officer Perez is survived by his expectant wife and two young children.

John Anthony "Rocky" Riojas

Age: 37

End of Watch: February 03, 2001

Officer John Anthony "Rocky" Riojas died shortly after being shot during a foot chase in a troubled apartment complex. Officer Riojas was able to catch the suspect and a struggle ensued. The suspect was able to gain control of Patrolman Riojas' weapon and shot him once in the head before fleeing the scene. Other officers were in the area and responded to the gunfire. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was arrested several days later and charged with capital murder.

Officer John Anthony "Rocky" Riojas was survived by his wife and two young children.

Age: 48

End of Watch: March 29, 2001

Officer Garza was shot and killed after responding to a domestic dispute. Two officers were initially called to the residence at approximately 0745 hours to stand guard while a resident removed possessions from a house. Officers were called back at approximately 0855 hours for another disturbance involving the man and wife. The two were arguing in a bedroom. The suspect had his back to Officer Garza while he attempted to separate the two. The suspect suddenly spun around and shot Officer Garza in the head with a Mac-10 semi-automatic handgun. The suspect then shot and killed his wife before chasing the woman's brother-in-law. After running out of ammunition he went back into the home and got an AK-47 and shot and wounded the brother-in-law and then shot Officer Garza again as he lay on the ground. The suspect was apprehended and charged with two counts of capital murder and three counts of attempted capital murder.

Officer Garza was survived by his wife and five children.

End of Watch: December 11, 2001

Officer Morales was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while driving to work on his department motorcycle. A vehicle in the center lane of I-10 sideswiped his motorcycle, causing him to be thrown to the ground. The suspect fled the scene but was followed by a citizen and was observed switching cars. The citizen continued to follow the suspect, who was later apprehended.

Officer Morales was survived by his wife and four children.

Bexar County Sheriff Department Deputy

Jesus "Jesse" A. Garza, Jr.

Age: 33

End of Watch: December 26, 2003

On Friday, December 26, 2003, Bexar County Deputy Jesse A. Garza, Jr., was killed in a one car crash while responding to an emergency call. At approximately 6:00pm , Bexar County Sheriff's dispatchers alerted units in the southeastern of Bexar County of a one car rollover with injuries on US Highway 181 South, near Kilowatt Road. Deputies J. Garza, E. Calderon, and J. Rodriguez responded to the call, code #3 (emergency lights and sirens).

Deputy Garza was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
He was a member of the Alamo Masonic Lodge #44 AF and AM.

John Wheeler

Age: 41

End of Watch: October 14, 2005

Officer Wheelers' parked cruiser was struck from behind by another vehicle estimated to be traveling at over ninety miles an hour. Wheeler was able to activate his emergency transponder, but died soon afterward as his car became engulfed in flames. According to the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office, the other driver had a blood alcohol level over twice the legal limit. Wheelers wife Kimberly, the San Antonio Police Department dispatcher who received the distress call initiated a GPS search and located his vehicle. Emergency crews where unable to rescue him from his burning cruiser.

Wheeler received the Purple Heart for "Valor in the Line of Duty" after being shot in 2003. He was struck in the neck and leg by 2 of 21 bullets fired at him by men with AK-47s as they fled a robbery.

Officer Wheeler was survived by his wife Kimberly and two daughters.

Wife of Val Lopez.

Valentine "Val" Lopez

Age: 54

End of Watch: June 21, 2006

On February 17, 1977, Officer Lopez answered a call for a man with a gun at a bar. He was initially the cover officer but was closer so he made the scene first. According to witnesses, as soon as Officer Lopez entered the bar, the suspect began to shoot. Lopez was shot twice. One bullet struck his abdomen and the other hit his badge first before striking his chest. Almost thirty years later, officer Lopez died due to complications from surgery related to the gunshot wound.

The suspect was charged and convicted of attempted capital murder.
He was sentenced to life in prison and has since died.

Officer Lopez was survived by his wife and two daughters.


Wife and Children of Mario Moreno.

Mario Moreno

Age: 37

End of Watch: September 21, 2007

Detective Moreno was a member of the Repeat Offender Program serving a warrant on a suspect of a domestic violence shooting. When the suspect spotted police he ran through a parking lot with detective Moreno and other officers in pursuit. During the foot chase, the suspect turned and fired a fatal shotgun blast at Detective Moreno. Other officers on the scene returned fire killing the suspect.

Officer Moreno was survived by his wife and two children.
